Hollywood star Nicolas Cage is discovering that even an expensive beachfront mansion cannot negotiate with Mother Nature. The Oscar-winning actor has revealed that he is temporarily living in hotels after a massive sinkhole opened near his Malibu home, turning his luxurious property into an unexpected construction and safety nightmare.
Speaking during an appearance at Los Angeles Comic Con on October 31, Cage casually described his unusual living situation, saying, “I’m currently a little bit homeless.” Apparently, when the ground beneath your multimillion-dollar property decides to disappear, even Hollywood royalty may have to start checking hotel availability!
The 62-year-old actor explained that something happened to his Malibu house, forcing him to move into hotels while the situation is being addressed. What was supposed to be a peaceful life overlooking the ocean has instead become a story involving collapsed driveways, emergency evacuations and an unwelcome geological surprise.
A Massive Sinkhole Turns Luxury Living Into a Nightmare
The trouble reportedly began on September 8, when an enormous sinkhole developed near the driveway of Cage’s Malibu property. Measuring approximately 25 feet deep and 30 by 60 feet across, the crater caused serious damage and raised concerns about the safety of nearby residences.
The situation was so alarming that authorities declared an emergency, with 31 nearby properties affected by evacuation and safety restrictions. Seven homes were reportedly red-tagged because of hazardous conditions, while 24 others faced restrictions because residents and emergency services could no longer safely access them.
Although officials have not established a definitive cause, the collapse occurred amid severe coastal conditions, flooding and unusually high tides associated with Hurricane Marie.
For Cage, the situation means that his home is no longer somewhere he can comfortably return to while the danger remains unresolved. One minute, you are enjoying ocean views; the next, you are wondering whether your driveway still exists!
Hotel Life Replaces Hollywood Comfort as Halloween Plans Change
The unexpected housing disruption has also affected Cage’s family routine, particularly his plans for Halloween with his four-year-old daughter, August, whom he shares with wife Riko Shibata.
During his Comic Con appearance, the actor explained that he would not have the usual neighbourhood trick-or-treating experience because of his current living arrangements. Instead, he planned to take August trick-or-treating in Santa Monica before returning to their temporary accommodation.
He also revealed his plans to watch Stanley Kubrick’s horror classic The Shining after putting his daughter to bed.
Interestingly, Cage joked about the film’s director having received a Razzie nomination for Worst Director, before praising the filmmaker’s work on the horror classic. Apparently, even a difficult housing situation cannot stop the actor from making room for a little movie-night entertainment.
Meanwhile, reports indicate that efforts are underway to protect and repair the Malibu property, with emergency permits obtained for protective measures, debris removal and further assessments.
When Nature Becomes the Uninvited Landlord
Cage’s situation is another reminder that expensive real estate does not always come with protection against natural disasters. A beautiful oceanfront address may offer spectacular views, but it can also come with coastal risks that no luxury renovation can simply wish away.
For now, the actor is making do with hotel accommodation while the damage is assessed and efforts continue to protect his home.
And if there is one lesson from this Hollywood housing drama, it is that sometimes the biggest threat to your mansion is not a troublesome neighbour, an unpaid mortgage or a property dispute. It is the actual ground deciding it has had enough!
