Trump Turns Texas Senate Race Into Personal Mission, Vows to Spend “A Lot of Time” Helping Ken Paxton

Ken Paxton has secured an unusually direct commitment from President Donald Trump, who says he plans to spend substantial time in Texas helping the Republican attorney general in his U.S. Senate campaign against Democratic nominee James Talarico.

Trump made the commitment while discussing the Texas contest, calling Paxton a “very good candidate” and saying, “I’m going to help Ken Paxton, and I’m going to spend a lot of time in Texas.” He also referred to Talarico by the mocking nickname “Talafreako,” a label Trump has previously used when attacking the Democratic candidate.

Trump Makes Paxton a National Priority

Ken Paxton has increasingly become a national Republican priority as the Texas Senate contest attracts significant attention ahead of the November election. Trump has already traveled to Texas to raise money for Paxton, making his first campaign appearance for the Republican nominee and using his political influence to rally donors and supporters behind him.

Trump’s pledge to spend more time in the state goes beyond a conventional endorsement. It signals that the president intends to personally campaign for Paxton and potentially use rallies, fundraising events and his national political network to strengthen the Republican campaign. At the Republican National Committee’s September convention in Dallas, Trump again urged supporters to back Paxton and indicated that he was prepared to do whatever he could to help the candidate.

A Closely Watched Texas Contest

Ken Paxton is facing Talarico, a Democratic Texas state representative who won his party’s nomination for the Senate race. Recent reporting has described the contest as highly competitive, with public polling showing a close race and Talarico holding a substantial fundraising advantage at points in the campaign.

The financial battle has also prompted outside Republican groups to intervene. The Washington Post reported that Senate Leadership Fund reserved nearly $13.8 million in advertising spending to support Paxton, while other Republican donors and organizations have also moved resources into the contest.

Trump’s language toward Talarico has added a more personal tone to the contest. Rather than simply outlining policy differences, the president has repeatedly used the “Talafreako” nickname and questioned whether Talarico represents Texas values. Those characterizations are Trump’s political attacks, while Talarico has presented his own campaign around issues including affordability, health care and economic policy.

With Trump now promising to spend considerable time in Texas, the Senate contest has become a prominent test of how much influence the president can bring to a competitive race. For Paxton, the endorsement provides direct access to Trump’s national political operation; for Democrats, the president’s involvement gives them a clear national figure to campaign against.

The coming weeks will show how Donald’s promised campaign intervention affects fundraising, advertising, turnout efforts and the broader political contest. For now, the president has made his position unmistakable: he intends to spend considerable political capital helping Paxton in Texas.
