Trump’s latest broadside came after Collins’ The Source discussed the administration’s difficulties addressing affordability concerns. The program highlighted Trump’s repeated claims that the economy is performing exceptionally well alongside polling showing significant public dissatisfaction with his handling of the cost of living.
Trump’s Attack on Kaitlan Collins
Kaitlan Collins was singled out by Trump after the panel challenged the administration’s economic messaging. Trump said CNN should get rid of its “3rd rate” anchors and claimed the network is “fading FAST,” turning a disagreement over political coverage into another direct confrontation between the president and a major television journalist.
The attack continues a long-running relationship between Trump and Collins that has frequently been combative. Collins has questioned Trump directly in interviews and at presidential events, while Trump has repeatedly criticized her reporting and on-air approach. Her current role combines primetime hosting with coverage of the White House.
CNN Defends Its Anchor
CNN rejected Trump’s characterization of Collins. A network spokesperson described her as an “exceptional journalist,” praising her reporting from the White House and elsewhere and saying audiences around the world trust her work.
The ratings argument is also more complicated than Trump’s post suggests. CNN, like other cable-news networks, has faced significant audience and business pressures, but Trump’s claim that Collins herself has “really low ratings” is an assertion from the president rather than an independently established fact in the reporting surrounding his post. At the same time, current political polling shows Trump himself facing substantial approval challenges, particularly over the economy and cost of living.
Trump’s latest attack therefore fits a familiar pattern: when television coverage challenges his preferred narrative, he often responds by attacking the journalist, the network and its audience numbers. Collins, meanwhile, remains one of CNN’s most prominent political anchors, meaning the confrontation is unlikely to be the last chapter in their increasingly public media feud.
