Talarico has once again become the target of President Donald Trump’s attacks over an allegation about his eating habits, with Trump describing the Texas Democratic Senate candidate as a “vaygan” and claiming he only pretends to eat meat to appeal to voters. Trump also told supporters that Talarico allegedly eats meat at barbecues before going backstage and vomiting. There is no evidence supporting that story.
Talarico Becomes Target of Personal Campaign Attack
Talarico has repeatedly rejected the claim that he is vegan. Fact-checkers have found photographs and videos showing him eating meat, eggs, dairy and other animal products. His campaign spokesperson has also explicitly said Talarico is not and has never been a vegan or vegetarian.
The vegan allegation appears to have originated partly from comments Talarico made in 2022 about reducing meat consumption and his campaign’s use of non-meat food at events. However, those comments did not establish that he personally followed a vegan diet. During his 2026 Senate campaign, Talarico has acknowledged eating meat.
Trump: Talarico Attack Adds Barbecue to Texas Senate Fight
Talarico is running against Republican Ken Paxton for a U.S. Senate seat, making the dispute part of a closely watched 2026 Texas political contest. Trump has repeatedly attacked Talarico, including using the nickname “Talafreako,” while backing Paxton in the race.
Trump’s latest remarks take the dietary attack further by presenting an alleged behind-the-scenes vomiting episode as fact. However, available reporting and fact-checking have found no evidence that such an incident occurred. The claim therefore remains an unsupported allegation rather than an established event.
The episode illustrates the increasingly personal tone of the Texas Senate campaign, where candidates and their supporters have used questions about food, lifestyle and cultural identity alongside debates over policy. For Talarico, the repeated vegan allegation has become a recurring feature of attacks against his candidacy despite his public denials and documented consumption of animal products.
