Pezeshkian Turns the Terrorism Accusation Back on America and Israel

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has dramatically escalated his criticism of the United States and Israel, accusing both countries of practising what he described as “state terrorism” and questioning the logic behind military operations across the Middle East. In remarks that have added another explosive layer to an already volatile regional confrontation, Pezeshkian argued that the killing of individuals, entire families and the destruction of buildings cannot simply be justified by labelling targets as terrorists.

PEZESHKIAN QUESTIONS THE “TERRORIST” LABEL

Pezeshkian’s central argument was that the definition of terrorism appears to depend increasingly on who is holding the weapons and who is writing the official explanation afterwards. He pointed to military actions involving Gaza, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Qatar and Iran, arguing that the destruction of civilian areas and the killing of people cannot automatically become acceptable simply because authorities say a militant or terrorist was being targeted.

The Iranian president’s comments come as the region remains caught in a cycle of retaliation. Recent fighting has involved direct U.S.-Iranian confrontation, Israeli military operations and attacks affecting shipping and energy infrastructure. The conflict has also created serious international concerns over the Strait of Hormuz, with Iran insisting that its position on navigation is connected to the wider confrontation with Washington.

WHEN EVERYONE CLAIMS TO BE THE DEFENDER

Pezeshkian’s remarks have effectively turned the word “terrorism” into another battlefield. His accusation is particularly significant because Washington has historically accused Iran of supporting militant groups and described Tehran as a state sponsor of terrorism, while Iran argues that its regional actions are defensive responses to foreign aggression. In other words, both sides appear to have arrived at the same vocabulary while assigning themselves completely different roles in the story.

The timing makes the argument even more politically charged. Recent diplomatic activity has attempted to prevent the conflict from becoming an even wider regional war, while military confrontations continue. At the latest BRICS summit, Iran joined other members in supporting language calling for restraint, civilian protection and diplomatic solutions, even as fighting and accusations continued elsewhere.

For now, Pezeshkian’s declaration has added another powerful headline to an already crowded Middle East crisis: everybody insists they are fighting terrorism, everybody insists the other side is responsible, and civilians remain trapped between competing explanations and military calculations. As the confrontation continues, OGM News will continue watching whether the war of words produces diplomacy—or simply gives the world’s politicians another microphone with which to shout across the battlefield.
