Pete Hegseth Unleashes the Robots: Pentagon Gets Autonomous Warfare Command as ‘Woke’ Battle Returns to Quantico

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has announced plans for a new Autonomous Warfare Command, putting artificial intelligence, drones and robotic systems at the center of the Pentagon’s future-war strategy — while once again taking aim at what he describes as “woke” culture inside the military.
Speaking at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia, on Wednesday, September 30, Hegseth unveiled the proposed AUTOWARCOM, which is expected to operate as a four-star combatant command with service-like authorities. The command is designed to accelerate the development and deployment of autonomous and robotic capabilities across the U.S. military.

Pete Hegseth: From Warrior Ethos to Warrior Algorithms

According to the announcement, AUTOWARCOM will concentrate on technologies including drones, artificial intelligence, robotics and command-and-control systems. Pete Hegseth said the military needs to adapt more rapidly to technological developments on modern battlefields, where relatively inexpensive unmanned systems are increasingly important. The proposed command is expected to be established by October 1, 2027, subject to the necessary congressional action.

For a Pentagon that has spent years discussing the future of warfare, the announcement sounded like a particularly serious invitation to the robots. The planned command will have dedicated manpower, budget and acquisition authorities, meaning autonomous warfare is being positioned as more than another Pentagon technology experiment. In satirical terms, the message from Quantico appears to be: the next generation of soldiers may need excellent fitness, strong discipline and — if the Pentagon gets its way — a robot capable of doing the actual running.

But Hegseth’s speech was not simply a technology presentation. He again attacked what he considers excessive political correctness and “woke” influences within the military, continuing themes from his 2025 Quantico address, when he called for a return to what he described as a stronger “warrior ethos.” Reporting from Wednesday’s speech said he again criticized gender pronouns, identity-focused initiatives and other programs he considers distractions from military readiness.

The contrast was difficult to miss: while the secretary was promoting highly sophisticated machines designed to operate in future battlefields, he was simultaneously revisiting cultural battles that have become a recurring feature of his tenure. With President Donald J. Trump’s administration pursuing a broader military restructuring, Hegseth’s Quantico appearance presented technology, personnel changes and cultural reform as parts of the same transformation.

The Autonomous Warfare Command is therefore one of the most consequential announcements from Pete Hegseth’s latest military reset, particularly because it would give autonomous and robotic warfare its own four-star command structure. Whether Congress approves the proposed structure, how much authority the command ultimately receives and how quickly the Pentagon can turn ambitious AI and drone plans into operational capabilities will now be closely watched. OGM News will continue watching the robots, the generals and, of course, the next round of the Pentagon’s ‘woke versus warrior’ debate because apparently the future of warfare has arrived with plenty of human arguments attached.
