Tyler Perry has apparently watched enough relationship drama — both on screen and around him — to make one major personal decision: marriage is not for him. The filmmaker and actor recently said he has no plans to ever walk down the aisle, explaining that it is not marriage itself that worries him, but what can happen when a marriage ends in divorce.
Perry made the comments while promoting Why Did I Get Married Again?, the latest installment in his marriage-themed movie franchise. In a rather ironic twist, the man behind movies that repeatedly explore love, commitment, marriage and relationship problems is now telling the world that he would rather keep his own relationship status permanently off the wedding schedule.
Divorce Is the Part That Has Perry Saying “Nope”
During his appearance on The Jennifer Hudson Show, Perry was asked whether he would ever get married. His answer was reportedly immediate: “Nope.” He then explained that his concern is not marriage itself but divorce, saying he has seen people who were doing well financially end up losing their wealth after divorce.
Perry described his position as choosing to remain free rather than take what he sees as a potentially costly gamble. In classic Hollywood irony, the man currently promoting another movie about marriage is effectively saying that his own version of the happily-ever-after story may simply be “The End” before the wedding scene even starts.
Hollywood’s Marriage Movie Mogul Is Staying Unmarried
Perry, 57, has never been married and shares an 11-year-old son, Aman, with his former partner Gelila Bekele. He has also previously spoken about wanting to spend more time with his son and slow down as he gets older.
His latest comments come at an especially amusing time because Why Did I Get Married Again? is built around relationships, weddings and the complicated realities of married life. The film brings back several characters from the earlier movies while introducing a younger generation dealing with many of the same relationship questions.
For now, Perry appears comfortable keeping marriage as something he writes about, directs, acts around and puts on Netflix — rather than something he plans to experience personally. Whether his position ever changes remains his decision, but for the moment, the Hollywood mogul seems perfectly happy watching the wedding drama from behind the camera.
