President Donald J. Trump has once again placed America’s international economic relationships under the spotlight, questioning why the United States should continue what he describes as the costly business of “carrying” countries around the world. In remarks this week, Trump specifically questioned the economic relationships with Canada and Mexico, asking why America should continue carrying them while arguing that the arrangement cannot continue indefinitely.
America’s Global Carrying Bill Lands on Trump’s Desk
Trump’s argument comes as he continues to focus heavily on trade deficits, which he has characterized as losses for the United States. In a September 16 post, he argued that stopping trade with countries where the U.S. runs deficits could save at least $1.5 trillion annually, while demanding lower U.S. interest rates.
The satirical question now hanging over Washington is whether the White House is preparing to issue a global invoice marked: “Dear World, payment is now due.” Canada and Mexico, two of America’s major trading partners, suddenly find themselves mentioned in Trump’s latest argument about who is benefiting from the American economic system and who is supposedly carrying whom.
Canada, Mexico and the Great American Carrying Debate
Trump’s comments come while economic negotiations with Mexico remain active. At the same time, the United States and Canada continue to navigate broader trade and security tensions. Trump’s remarks therefore add another layer to an already complicated North American relationship, where tariffs, trade balances and national economic interests remain major talking points.
The wider “carrying” argument also has a security dimension. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said in January that the period when Europe and Canada could conveniently rely on the United States to carry much of the security burden was over, while NATO’s 2026 summit reported that European allies and Canada had increased core defence investment by more than $139 billion since their 2025 commitment.
For now, Trump’s message is clear: America should not continue carrying what he sees as an unfair share of the world’s economic and security responsibilities.
