NewsNation host and journalist Chris Cuomo has claimed that then-President Joe Biden intentionally “submarined” Democrats’ chances of winning the 2024 presidential election after party leaders pressured him to abandon his reelection campaign. Cuomo made the allegation on the September 24 episode of his podcast, The Chris Cuomo Project.
Cuomo argued that Biden was angry about being pushed out of the race and deliberately mishandled the transition that eventually placed then-Vice President Kamala Harris at the top of the Democratic ticket. Cuomo said he believed Biden wanted to punish Democratic leaders who had opposed his continued candidacy.
Chris Cuomo Accuses Biden of Undermining Democrats
Cuomo said he believed Biden “submarined the whole thing,” alleging that the former president forced Harris onto the party, delayed the transition and interfered with the process. Cuomo also claimed Biden wanted to punish Democrats for not allowing him to remain the nominee.
However, Cuomo did not provide public evidence establishing that Biden deliberately sabotaged the Democratic campaign. Newsmax’s report noted that his allegation differs from the publicly documented sequence of events surrounding Biden’s withdrawal from the race.
Biden Dropped Out After Pressure From Democrats
Biden faced increasing pressure from Democratic lawmakers and party figures following his June 27, 2024, debate against President Donald Trump. He initially resisted calls to withdraw but announced on July 21 that he was ending his reelection campaign and immediately endorsed Harris.
Harris subsequently became the Democratic presidential nominee and entered the general election campaign with a little more than three months before Election Day. She ultimately lost the November election to Trump, who received 312 electoral votes to Harris’ 226, according to the reported results.
Chris Cuomo Reopens Debate Over Democrats’ 2024 Defeat
Chris Cuomo’s comments add another interpretation to the continuing debate over why Democrats lost the 2024 presidential election. He argued that Biden’s resentment toward Democratic leaders played a significant role, while other accounts have focused on the president’s debate performance, the shortened Harris campaign and voter concerns over issues including the economy and immigration.
Cuomo also claimed that Biden still privately acknowledges his role in undermining the campaign, citing unnamed people who he said had heard the former president discuss the election.
