Republican Congressman James Comer has expressed growing concerns about War Secretary Pete Hegseth, as pressure mounts in Congress over the Trump administration’s handling of the ongoing war with Iran.
Comer, Chairman of the House Oversight Committee, acknowledged that Republican lawmakers have serious questions about Hegseth’s leadership, particularly the administration’s strategy for bringing the conflict to an end.
Speaking during an interview with NewsNation on Friday, November 6, Comer said the decision on whether Hegseth should remain in office ultimately rests with President Donald Trump. However, he questioned the administration’s direction in Iran, stating that lawmakers had no clear understanding of its plans moving forward.
Comer Questions Trump’s Iran War Strategy
Comer expressed concern that dissatisfaction with the Iran conflict was growing among Republican voters, particularly those troubled by rising fuel prices and the absence of a clearly communicated exit strategy.
He noted that Republican lawmakers were increasingly demanding answers about the administration’s military objectives and the broader consequences of the conflict.
His comments are significant because Comer has been regarded as a strong supporter of President Trump. However, he stopped short of explicitly declaring that he would vote to impeach Hegseth or confirming that enough Republican votes were available to remove him. The remarks nevertheless highlight growing divisions within Republican ranks over the administration’s handling of the war.
Thomas Massie Prepares Fresh Impeachment Push
Meanwhile, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie of Kentucky is preparing to revive his impeachment effort against Hegseth when the House returns from its midterm recess.
Massie introduced eight articles of impeachment against the War Secretary in September, but the House did not vote on the proposal after Speaker Mike Johnson ended the legislative session ahead of the midterm elections.
Massie has maintained that he will continue pursuing the matter unless Hegseth resigns.
The impeachment effort reportedly centres on allegations involving the administration’s military actions against Iran, the use of military force without congressional authorisation and other alleged violations of congressional authority. These remain allegations that would require consideration by lawmakers.
Hegseth Rejects Calls for His Removal
Despite the growing criticism, Hegseth has rejected the impeachment effort, describing it as political theatre.
He has also maintained that he will not back down in the face of criticism from lawmakers and political opponents.
President Trump, for his part, has continued to express confidence in Hegseth, leaving the War Secretary’s political future uncertain as Congress prepares to consider the impeachment proposal.
The controversy has also intensified following Republican losses in the November midterm elections, with some members of the party questioning the political and economic consequences of the Iran war. James Comer’s comments have added to the growing pressure surrounding Pete Hegseth’s position in the Trump administration. With Thomas Massie preparing another impeachment push and questions emerging from within the Republican Party, the coming congressional session could become an important test of Hegseth’s political support.
Whether the impeachment effort secures sufficient votes remains to be seen, particularly as President Trump continues to stand behind his War Secretary.
OGM News will continue to monitor developments surrounding Pete Hegseth, the Iran war and the growing political disagreements within the Republican Party.
