U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that Taiwan has agreed to purchase 30% of the natural gas expected from a proposed Alaska pipeline project over 20 years, describing the arrangement as a major commitment that could guarantee the project’s success. However, questions remain about the final terms of the deal, the project’s commercial viability and whether the announcement represents a completed agreement or an arrangement still under negotiation.
Trump made the announcement at a political rally in Wasilla, Alaska, on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, while campaigning for Republican Senator Dan Sullivan ahead of the November midterm elections. Taiwan subsequently confirmed that negotiations over the proposed energy partnership had made significant progress, with its state-owned energy company planning to purchase six million metric tons of liquefied natural gas annually and potentially invest up to $4.4 billion in the project.
TRUMP DECLARES VICTORY AS TAIWAN’S GAS COMMITMENT COMES UNDER SCRUTINY
During the rally, Trump presented Taiwan’s proposed purchase as a major breakthrough for the long-planned Alaska liquefied natural gas project, which aims to transport natural gas from Alaska’s North Slope through an extensive pipeline to an export terminal in the southern part of the state.
The proposed project is designed to produce approximately 20 million metric tons of liquefied natural gas annually. Trump said Taiwan had agreed to buy 30% of the output for 20 years, arguing that such a commitment would help guarantee the project’s success. However, Taiwan’s subsequent statement did not confirm the 20-year duration or establish that a final, binding purchase contract had been signed.
Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs said state-owned CPC Corporation had made significant progress in negotiations following nearly 18 months of discussions and evaluation. Under the current plan, CPC would purchase six million metric tons annually once production begins and could participate in the project’s development through an investment of up to $4.4 billion.
The ministry also clarified that specific investment arrangements, ownership stakes and related conditions would be determined through further negotiations and commercial procedures. This distinction is important because a proposed purchase commitment is not necessarily the same as a completed commercial contract. Consequently, although Trump’s announcement signals progress, the final contractual details remain a key issue to watch.
ALASKA PIPELINE PROJECT FACES FINANCIAL QUESTIONS DESPITE TAIWAN’S INTEREST
Despite the announcement, the Alaska LNG project continues to face questions about its cost, financing and commercial competitiveness. The proposed infrastructure involves a pipeline stretching approximately 800 miles, alongside facilities required to process and export liquefied natural gas. Industry observers have questioned whether the enormous investment required can be justified by future sales, particularly because the project could cost substantially more than comparable facilities on the U.S. Gulf Coast.
Project supporters argue that the pipeline could create jobs, attract international investment and provide Alaska with a new route to Asian energy markets. Direct access to Asia could also reduce shipping distances compared with routes that require vessels to pass through the Panama Canal or travel around the southern tip of Africa. For Taiwan, purchasing gas from Alaska could diversify its energy supply and strengthen its commercial relationship with the United States.
Nevertheless, the project still needs firm commercial commitments and financing to move forward. Reports indicate that arrangements covering approximately 13 million metric tons of annual output have been lined up with buyers in Asia and French energy company TotalEnergies, while additional agreements must be secured and converted into binding contracts to support financing. Developers are targeting a final investment decision for the pipeline in 2026, with the export facility decision expected in 2027 and initial exports targeted for 2031. Taiwan’s potential deliveries could begin as early as 2032 if the project proceeds on schedule.
The political implications are also significant. Trump made the announcement while campaigning for Senator Dan Sullivan, who has supported the development of Alaska’s oil and gas industry. A major international commitment could strengthen the political case for the project, but its long-term success will depend on financing, construction, regulatory requirements and the ability to deliver gas at commercially competitive prices.
The announcement also follows Trump’s earlier claim that South Korea would make a substantial investment in the Alaska pipeline project. South Korean officials had expressed the need to assess the project’s commercial viability before treating the proposed investment as final. The experience highlights why public announcements about major energy deals must be distinguished from completed contracts and confirmed financial commitments. Trump’s announcement of Taiwan’s proposed purchase of 30% of Alaska’s future gas output represents a potentially important development in U.S.–Taiwan energy cooperation. Taiwan has confirmed progress in negotiations and outlined plans for annual purchases of six million metric tons of liquefied natural gas, alongside a possible investment of up to $4.4 billion.
However, the final purchase terms and investment arrangements remain subject to further negotiations. The central question is whether the proposed commitment will provide sufficient commercial certainty to move the costly Alaska project from political announcements to construction and eventual gas exports.
Do you think Taiwan’s proposed gas deal will finally make the long-delayed Alaska pipeline project commercially viable, or is Trump declaring victory before all the major agreements have been finalised?
