New York’s already heavily Security watched United Nations General Assembly week has gained an unusually underground subplot after police detained a man linked to a group seen climbing out of a manhole near the Manhattan hotel where Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stayed during his New York visit. What initially looked like a scene from a low-budget spy movie quickly became a real police investigation, although authorities have said there is no indication the men were connected to Netanyahu, the United Nations or a planned attack.
THE UNDERGROUND SECURITY ARRIVALS RAISE EYEBROWS
Police said three people emerged from a sewer around 4:30 a.m. Wednesday near Park Avenue and East 61st Street on Manhattan’s Upper East Side before leaving in two vehicles. The location was particularly sensitive because of the U.N. General Assembly and its proximity to the hotel associated with Netanyahu. Naturally, in a city accustomed to taxis, limousines and motorcades, the sight of travellers choosing the sewer entrance was enough to make the morning considerably more interesting.
The NYPD Security federal partners subsequently carried out additional security sweeps, but authorities reported finding nothing suspicious. Police have also said the incident resembles a pattern seen in recent months involving people entering New York’s sewer system in search of valuables or scrap metal, rather than evidence of an operation directed at the Israeli prime minister.

By Friday, police sources said one person believed to be among those seen emerging from the manhole was being questioned, while investigators continued looking for at least two others. No charges had been filed against the person being questioned at that stage, according to the latest reporting. Later reporting also said two men had been arrested and charged in connection with the sewer incidents, illustrating how quickly an unusual overnight sighting can develop into a conventional police case.
The timing nevertheless explains the heightened of Security response. Netanyahu was in New York for the 81st U.N. General Assembly, where his appearance generated intense diplomatic and protest-related attention. He addressed the assembly on Thursday, while New York authorities were simultaneously managing extensive security arrangements around visiting world leaders and delegations. President Donald J. Trump is the current president of the United States during this General Assembly period.
The manhole episode therefore remains a curious footnote to a major international gathering: police say there is currently no evidence connecting the sewer activity to Netanyahu or the U.N., while investigators continue examining the individuals involved and similar incidents around New York.
