President Trump Commutes George Santos’ Prison Sentence, Citing Harsh Treatment and “Judicial Overreach”

President Donald Trump has commuted the prison sentence of former New York congressman George Santos, ordering his immediate release just three months after he began serving a seven-year term for wire fraud and identity theft. The announcement, made Friday evening through the president Trump’s Truth Social account, marks one of Trump’s most controversial clemency decisions in his second term.

In his statement, President Trump described George Santos as a “rogue,” but one unfairly singled out by the justice system. “George has been in solitary confinement for long stretches of time and, by all accounts, has been horribly mistreated,” Trump wrote. “Therefore, I just signed a commutation releasing George Santos from prison immediately. Good luck, George, have a great life!”

Santos, 37, had pleaded guilty to charges that included defrauding donors and stealing identities to finance his 2022 congressional campaign. His release, however, came amid growing conservative complaints about what they see as selective prosecution of political figures.

Greene Leads Push for Clemency From President Trump, Calling Sentence ‘Abusive’

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia was among the leading voices urging Trump to intervene. Earlier this year, she sent a formal plea to the Department of Justice’s pardon office, calling Santos’ punishment “a grave injustice” and an “abusive overreach by the judicial system.”

Greene detailed Santos’ conditions at FCI Fairton in New Jersey, alleging he was held in solitary confinement “24 hours per day,” allowed showers only three times a week, and denied regular sunlight. “This is torture,” she wrote in a social media post. On Friday, following Trump’s announcement, Greene publicly thanked the president, writing, “THANK YOU President Trump for releasing George Santos!! He was unfairly treated and put in solitary confinement, which is torture!!”

While Greene has been a loyal supporter of Trump’s agenda, her recent advocacy for controversial figures and criticism of GOP leadership has underscored her willingness to break ranks on high-profile issues, including the Israel-Gaza war and government shutdown debates.

A Polarizing Figure with a Trail of Fabrications

Once celebrated for flipping a competitive New York congressional district, George Santos’ meteoric rise ended in scandal after revelations that much of his personal and professional biography was fabricated. Santos falsely claimed his mother died in the 9/11 attacks, exaggerated his Jewish heritage, and even denied — before later admitting — past appearances as a drag performer in Brazil.

Following a scathing 2023 House ethics report and multiple criminal indictments, Santos was expelled from Congress, becoming only the sixth member in history to face that fate. Prosecutors revealed that he had used campaign donations for personal luxuries — including Botox treatments, designer clothing, casino trips, and even subscriptions to the adult platform OnlyFans.

At sentencing, Judge Joanna Seybert chastised Santos for his lack of remorse, asking, “Where is your remorse? Where do I see it?” The court also ordered him to pay more than $370,000 in restitution and forfeit over $200,000. George Santos wept during the proceedings, claiming he had “betrayed his constituents’ trust” but insisting he was being unfairly targeted.

Now freed by presidential order, Santos’ political future remains uncertain. Yet his release signals that President Trump continues to wield the powers of clemency as a political instrument — blending compassion, loyalty, and controversy in equal measure.
