Rock star Bret Michaels has been forced to put the brakes on his 2026 touring schedule after doctors decided that his recent return to the stage came a little too soon. The Poison frontman, 63, canceled all remaining dates on his Live & Amplified tour after performing a comeback show in Sugar Hill, Georgia, on August 21. His medical team subsequently determined that he needed additional time to recover from recent kidney stone surgery and ordered him off the road for the next several months.
Bret Michaels Tried to Rock His Way Back Too Soon
The cancellation comes only weeks after Michaels underwent emergency surgery for a complicated obstructing kidney stone. The problem became serious after he experienced severe pain following a July 18 performance in Spokane, Washington. Despite the discomfort, Michaels performed several shows before eventually requiring medical treatment and a ureteral stent. Doctors initially instructed him to take three to four weeks away from performing and limit himself to light physical activity.
Apparently, however, the rocker’s internal calendar and his doctors’ recovery calendar were not exactly playing the same song. Michaels returned to the stage at The Bowl at Sugar Hill on August 21, enthusiastically telling fans he was ready to give them everything he had. Unfortunately, after the show, doctors and paramedics determined that he still needed significant rest and recovery. The comeback lasted one performance before the medical team effectively handed him a backstage pass to his own living room.
Doctors Say the Road Can Wait
Michaels’ doctors, Dr. Abby Borhan and Dr. Patel, said the singer needs a “period of rest and slow recovery.” They were particularly concerned about the demands of touring during the summer heat and humidity and the effect those conditions can have on Michaels’ blood sugar levels. His medical team had previously explained that his Type 1 diabetes and other underlying health factors make recovery from the surgery more complicated.
The decision means Michaels will miss the remainder of his scheduled 2026 performances, including the Mountain Music Festival and other private and public events. His entertainment company apologized to fans and promoters while emphasizing that the priority is getting the singer healthy enough to return “healthy, strong and ready to rock.” In other words, the concerts are canceled, but the rock-and-roll retirement party has not been announced—much to the relief of anyone who still expects “Every Rose Has Its Thorn” to appear on a live setlist again.
