Donald Trump Says “Our Nation Is Winning” After “Incredible” Meeting With Xi Jinping

Donald Trump is declaring that “our nation is winning” after his latest meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, describing the encounter as “incredible” and emphasizing its length. Speaking to reporters on Monday, Trump said the meeting lasted a long time and effectively stretched across two days, while adding that “a lot of good things” were happening following the discussions.

Donald Trump Highlights Length and Progress of Xi Talks

The latest Trump-Xi engagement came during Xi’s three-day state visit to Washington, which included high-level discussions on trade, technology, artificial intelligence and international security. Trump also confirmed that the leaders discussed the war in Iran, although he did not publicly provide extensive details about what was agreed on that issue.

Donald Trump’s description of the meeting as an “incredible” encounter reflects the administration’s effort to present the relationship with Beijing as productive despite the long-running competition between the two countries. Trump has repeatedly emphasized negotiations and personal diplomacy with Xi as tools for addressing disagreements over trade and other strategic matters.

Trump has also pointed to the length of the discussions as evidence of the importance of the engagement. The president said the meeting lasted two days when considered in its broader context, although Xi’s overall Washington state visit lasted three days.

U.S.-China Relationship Moves Into Another Round

The latest summit did not erase the major differences between Washington and Beijing. The two governments continue to negotiate over trade, technology, artificial intelligence, Taiwan and other strategic issues, while analysts have noted that several previous commitments remain works in progress.

The leaders have nevertheless agreed to continue their direct engagement. Donald Trump said he expects to meet Xi again in November in China and then at the G20 summit in Miami in December. Xi also invited Trump and first lady Melania Trump to China, creating the possibility of additional face-to-face diplomacy before the end of the year.

Trump’s declaration that America is “winning” is a political assessment rather than a specific economic or diplomatic measurement. The broader U.S.-China relationship remains a mixture of cooperation, competition and unresolved disputes, with the two governments continuing to negotiate over issues that could affect global trade, technology and security.

For now, the most visible result of the latest engagement is that Washington and Beijing are keeping the highest-level diplomatic channel open. With Trump and Xi expected to meet again later in the year, their next rounds of discussions will provide further opportunities to determine whether the positive language surrounding the relationship produces concrete agreements.
