Courteney Cox Says Her Creative Obsession Can Be ‘Exhausting’ After Years of ‘Friends’ and ‘Cougar Town’

Courteney Cox Says Her Creative Obsession Can Be ‘Exhausting’ After Years of ‘Friends’ and ‘Cougar Town’

Courteney Cox is reflecting on the staying power of some of the biggest projects of her career — and revealing that the same determination that helped define her decades in Hollywood can also make her an exhausting creative partner. In an exclusive PEOPLE interview published September 26, 2026, Cox looked back at her 10 years on Friends, six years on Cougar Town and seven Scream movies while explaining why she tends to hold on tightly to projects she believes in.

Courteney Cox Says She Likes Things That Last

Courteney Cox says longevity is something she genuinely embraces. Rather than being eager to move on from successful projects, the actress explained that she is “very into things that last a long time,” pointing to the extraordinary length of her involvement with Friends, Cougar Town and the Scream franchise.

Her career history backs up that description. Cox played Monica Geller on Friends from 1994 to 2004, later spending six seasons as Jules Cobb on Cougar Town. She also remained connected to the Scream franchise through seven films, helping make Gale Weathers one of her most recognizable characters outside television.

That willingness to stay committed has now followed her into filmmaking. Cox told PEOPLE that she worked on Evil Genius for eight years, navigating a lockdown and two Hollywood strikes before finally getting the project made. She said she simply could not let the movie go and kept fighting through the obstacles because she felt she had to make it.

Courteney Cox Admits She Can Be ‘Exhausting’ About Details

Courteney Cox says her intense attention to detail is not limited to acting or directing. Discussing her Homecourt lifestyle brand, she explained that she becomes deeply involved in the creative decisions surrounding her products, including the color and shape of bottles, typography, textures and fragrances. “I’m exhausting because I just care about everything,” she told PEOPLE.

That description fits with Cox’s broader evolution as a Hollywood creative. She has moved beyond simply performing in front of the camera to directing and executive producing projects, including Cougar Town and other television work. Her latest film, Evil Genius, stars Patricia Arquette and David Harbour and premiered at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival.

Cox’s comments also offer an interesting contrast with the character that first made her famous. Monica Geller was famously organized, precise and obsessed with getting things right, while Cox’s real-life comments suggest that her own attention to detail is less about controlling a fictional apartment and more about making sure her creative ideas are executed exactly as she imagines them.

For Courteney Cox, that intensity appears to be part of the reason her career has remained so connected to long-running projects. From a decade on Friends to six seasons of Cougar Town, seven Scream films and years spent developing Evil Genius, Cox has repeatedly demonstrated that once she believes in something, she is prepared to stay with it. And if that makes her “exhausting” sometimes, she seems perfectly comfortable with that reputation — especially when the result is something she genuinely cares about.
