Debby Ryan is opening up about a life-altering brain injury she says she experienced several years ago, revealing that the incident left lasting effects even after months of rehabilitation. The 33-year-old actress discussed her health during a September 15 appearance on Mythical Kitchen’s Last Meals, where she spoke candidly about her history of migraines and five concussions.
Ryan explained that her first four concussions resulted from individual “incidents,” but the fifth involved sustained shaking lasting more than a minute. She described the resulting injury as profoundly different from what she had experienced before, saying there was essentially a “pre-incident Debby” and “post-incident Debby.”
Debby Ryan Spent Six Months in Neurological Rehabilitation
Debby Ryan said the injury left her “out of commission” for six months. During that period, she underwent approximately six months of neurological rehabilitation and also tried what she characterized as a fringe or experimental treatment that she said helped her feel more functional again.
However, Ryan said the recovery did not completely restore everything she had before the injury. She explained that “some things just did not come back,” highlighting the possibility of lasting changes from the trauma. She also expressed gratitude for the people around her who supported her as she navigated changes in her behavior and cognitive patterns.
Ryan said her support system helped her through a period when she was trying to understand how the injury had changed her. She described feeling fortunate to have people who continued to love and support her while also allowing space for the possibility that some changes might be permanent.
Brain Injury Intensified Ryan’s Migraine Struggles
Brain Injury has also affected the way Ryan experiences her surroundings. The actress said she is a “migraine warrior” and described migraines as “hellish,” explaining that her symptoms became significantly worse following the fifth concussion.
Ryan said ordinary sensory information can sometimes become overwhelming. She explained that the world can feel extremely loud and bright, while visual information can become so distracting that she sometimes finds it easier to close her eyes in order to see and think more clearly.
Her account comes as she continues working in entertainment, including a role in the 2026 drama The Sun Never Sets. She has also continued her personal life with husband Josh Dun, whom she married in 2019.
Debby Ryan has not presented her experience as a simple recovery story. Instead, her comments show how a serious brain injury can continue influencing everyday life long after the initial event and rehabilitation have ended. She has acknowledged both the difficulties and the people who helped her adapt.
For fans who grew up watching Debby Ryan on Disney Channel’s The Suite Life on Deck and Jessie, the revelation provides a very different look at the actress’s life away from the screen. Her willingness to discuss the long-term effects of repeated concussions also draws attention to symptoms that may not always be visible to others.
