Jim Jordan, House Judiciary Committee Chairman has accused Democratic-controlled jurisdictions of deliberately using sanctuary policies to restrict cooperation between local law enforcement and federal immigration authorities.
Jordan described the policies as part of what he called a “systematic plan of the left,” alleging that some sanctuary jurisdictions release immigrants who have been arrested for crimes rather than allowing federal immigration authorities to take custody of them.
“This is a systematic plan of the left who now control the Democrat Party,” Jordan said while discussing the issue with Newsmax.
His remarks come as congressional Republicans intensify their scrutiny of sanctuary policies and demand greater cooperation between local authorities and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Jordan Targets Sanctuary Jurisdictions
Jordan has argued that sanctuary policies create a dangerous disconnect between local and federal law enforcement. According to the chairman, some jurisdictions limit their cooperation with ICE even when people suspected or convicted of serious crimes are involved.
In May, Jordan and House Judiciary Subcommittee Chairman Tom McClintock formally demanded information from New York officials about sanctuary policies and their effect on federal immigration enforcement.
Jordan has also targeted jurisdictions in Virginia. In comments reported by WJLA, he accused sanctuary jurisdictions of releasing some illegal immigrants after arrests and argued that the practice could expose American communities to additional risks.

Officials targeted by Jordan have rejected his characterization of their policies. In response to congressional scrutiny in Arlington County, Virginia, a county spokesperson said local authorities continue to follow applicable state and federal laws while emphasizing that immigration enforcement is the responsibility of the federal government.
An attorney representing Arlington’s Commonwealth’s Attorney also accused Jordan and House Republicans of using congressional authority for political purposes, arguing that local officials should be allowed to determine how their agencies operate within the law.
Immigration Enforcement Becomes Political Battleground
The dispute reflects one of the most contentious questions in American immigration policy: how far state and local governments should cooperate with the federal government in enforcing immigration laws.
The Trump administration and congressional Republicans have made aggressive immigration enforcement a central priority, while Democratic officials in sanctuary jurisdictions have frequently resisted some federal enforcement practices.
