Florida Political Fallout: DeSantis Suspends Former Ally After Arrest on Child-Sex Abuse Charges

Florida politics has been hit by a deeply uncomfortable twist after Gov. Ron DeSantis suspended Michael Caruso, a former political ally and Palm Beach County clerk, following his arrest on five felony charges involving the alleged sexual abuse of a child. The allegations are serious and remain allegations unless and until established in court. Caruso has denied wrongdoing through his legal representation and is entitled to due process.

From Political “Legend” to Suspension

The case carries an especially striking political irony because Caruso was once closely aligned with DeSantis and was appointed by the governor in August 2025 to become Palm Beach County Clerk of the Circuit Court and Comptroller. The governor’s official announcement at the time described Caruso as a former state representative with extensive community and professional experience.

Now, the relationship has taken a dramatically different turn. DeSantis said he acted immediately after learning of the arrest, suspending Caruso from office. Caruso, 67, faces charges including kidnapping, lewd or lascivious molestation, lewd or lascivious exhibition, luring or enticing a child, and child abuse causing mental injury. A judge subsequently denied him bond and imposed restrictions on contact with the alleged victim and anyone under 18.

DeSantis Cuts Ties With Former Ally After Serious Child Abuse Charges

The allegations have attracted additional scrutiny because Caruso previously supported legislation championed by DeSantis that increased penalties for certain sexual offenses against children. DeSantis has also publicly praised Caruso’s political loyalty in the past, making the sudden suspension an uncomfortable chapter in the governor’s record of political appointments.

In a particularly grim twist, reports say the allegations concern a young male relative and events allegedly occurring during family activities in 2024 and 2025. Earlier allegations involving Caruso were also reportedly documented in court records, although those earlier accusations did not result in criminal charges. DeSantis has said he and his administration were unaware of the current allegations before the arrest.

The satirical lesson practically writes itself: in Florida politics, a reputation for being a political “legend” can apparently have a very short shelf life when the police arrive. But behind the political irony are extremely serious allegations involving a child, meaning the courtroom—not the political arena or social media—will ultimately determine what happened.

For now, Caruso remains accused, not convicted, while the investigation and legal proceedings continue. OGM News will continue watching this developing Florida story for further court actions, official statements and any new evidence that emerges.
