Epstein Case Still Haunts MAGA Movement Despite Trump's Push to Move On

When right-wing activist Jack Posobiec entered the Department of Justice in Washington, D.C., in February 2025, he expected long-awaited revelations about the notorious Jeffrey Epstein case. What he got instead was a cache of already-public documents and what he later called a “managed disappointment.” By July, when the Justice Department once again ruled out new disclosures, MAGA loyalists cried foul.

“We were all told more was coming,” Posobiec wrote on social media. “That answers were out there and would be provided. Incredible how utterly mismanaged this Epstein mess has been.” That sentiment has resonated widely within Trump’s base, where many believe the Epstein story is more than just a case of criminal wrongdoing — it’s a symbol of deep, systemic rot in American institutions.

A Symbol of the ‘Deep State’ in MAGA World

For years, Epstein’s name has carried outsized weight in the political imagination of the MAGA movement. To many, he’s not just a disgraced financier but a key to exposing what they see as a secretive ruling class — a so-called “deep state” immune from prosecution. Breitbart News editor Alex Marlow recently described the Epstein narrative as “shorthand” for government corruption on a podcast featuring Posobiec.

“It’s not that they care about Epstein personally,” Posobiec said during the discussion. “It’s that they care that there’s this optic that Epstein was somehow involved with a shadowy system… that really is a ruling power over us.” Despite official findings and years of investigations, belief in a hidden “client list” and cover-up continues to thrive.

Trump’s Complicated Dance With Epstein Theories

President Donald Trump has long understood the political potency of the Epstein saga among his supporters. During the 2024 election campaign, he promised transparency and even pledged to “declassify” Epstein-related files. “Yeah, yeah, I would,” Trump said when asked directly if he’d make the documents public.

But since assuming office for his second term in January, Trump has tried to sidestep the issue. Labeling the Epstein case “sordid, but it’s boring,” the president has shifted focus and accused Democrats of weaponizing the scandal for political gains. It’s a delicate balance: appeasing a conspiracy-conscious base without being consumed by it.

QAnon, Pizzagate, and the Evolution of MAGA Conspiracies

Conspiratorial thinking has been part of the Trump movement since its inception. His political rise was propelled in part by the false claim that President Barack Obama wasn’t born in the United States. By the time of his first presidency, conspiracy theories like Pizzagate and QAnon had flourished online, fueled by cryptic messages and viral content.

Mike Rothschild, author of The Storm Is Upon Us, noted that Epstein became a recurring figure in QAnon lore. “Epstein is seen as one of the major players in a global ‘paedo elite’… that Q and Trump were supposed to put an end to once and for all,” Rothschild told the BBC. The blurred lines between verified criminal acts and viral fiction have left even Trump officials treading carefully.

Justice Department Tries to Close the Door

In early July, the Justice Department and FBI released a memo reaffirming that Epstein died by suicide in 2019 and stating there was “no evidence” of a secret “client list.” It was a clear attempt to bring finality to the long-running speculation. But for many MAGA activists, it only reinforced their distrust.

Adding fuel to the fire, both FBI Director Kash Patel and Deputy Director Dan Bongino — Trump allies who once promoted theories around Epstein — have now gone silent. Their apparent retreat from the narrative has further alienated hardline believers. To them, it seems like another government cover-up.

Divided MAGA Base: Moving On or Digging In

While much of Trump’s mainstream support has aligned with the president’s call to move on, a segment of die-hard online supporters is unwilling to let go. On forums, social platforms, and podcasts, Epstein’s name continues to evoke theories of elite corruption and suppressed truths.

These loyalists aren’t necessarily focused on justice for Epstein’s victims — instead, they view the saga as confirmation of an entrenched, untouchable elite. As Trump seeks to consolidate his second-term agenda, the lingering obsession with Epstein among his most fervent followers could become both a distraction and a political liability.

A President’s Base, Haunted by a Ghost

Jeffrey Epstein is gone, and most of the facts surrounding his life and crimes are public. But for a movement built in part on distrust of institutions, the case remains unresolved. In MAGA circles, Epstein is no longer just a criminal — he’s a cipher for something larger, darker, and more enduring.

President Trump may want to turn the page, but for a vocal subset of his base, the Epstein chapter isn’t finished. Whether that continues to be a political asset or transforms into a liability remains to be seen.
