Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and U.S. President Donald Trump have set an ambitious goal to more than double bilateral trade between their countries, targeting $500 billion by 2030. The announcement came after a high-level meeting at the White House, where both leaders discussed trade, defense, energy, and immigration.
Modi Aiming for $500 Billion in Trade
During the joint press conference, Modi emphasized the need for deeper economic collaboration, citing India’s commitment to reducing tariffs on American goods. He announced that both nations would finalize a mutually beneficial trade agreement soon, focusing on critical sectors such as artificial intelligence, semiconductors, and strategic minerals.
“We have set ourselves the target of more than doubling our bilateral trade to attain $500 billion by 2030. Our teams will work on concluding very soon a mutually beneficial trade agreement,” Modi stated.
President Trump echoed Modi’s sentiments but insisted that trade relations must be reciprocal. He pointed out the long-standing U.S. trade deficit with India and expressed optimism that increasing exports of American energy and defense products would help close the gap.
Tackling Trade Imbalances and Tariffs
Trump reiterated his administration’s stance on “fair and reciprocal” trade, highlighting what he called India’s historically high tariffs on American imports. He noted that the U.S. would now implement a reciprocal tariff system, charging India the same rates it applies to American goods.
“It’s very hard to sell into India because they have trade barriers, very strong tariffs,” Trump said. “We are now a reciprocal nation. Whatever India charges, we’re charging them. I think it’s a very fair way.”
India, in response, has shown willingness to lower tariffs on U.S. goods, particularly in the agricultural and technology sectors. This move is seen as a strategic effort to smoothen trade relations and avoid sweeping reciprocal tariffs from Washington.
Expanding Defense and Energy Ties
Beyond trade, defense cooperation remains a key pillar of U.S.-India relations. Trump announced that India would purchase additional American military hardware, including advanced fighter jets, in a deal worth billions of dollars. Discussions are also underway for India to acquire F-35 aircraft, strengthening its air defense capabilities.

Modi sought to emphasize the strong personal rapport between him and Trump, introducing a new slogan inspired by Trump’s famous campaign phrase.
“It’s Make India Great Again – MIGA,” Modi declared. “MAGA plus MIGA… [is a] mega partnership for prosperity.”

Another critical issue discussed was immigration, particularly the repatriation of undocumented Indian nationals living in the U.S. Trump confirmed that Washington would deport individuals accused of illegal immigration back to India, with the first batch of 104 Indian nationals already sent home.
