Elizabeth Banks is stepping into one of the most closely watched true-crime stories of recent years, taking on the role of Karen Read in an upcoming Prime Video limited series.
The series is based on the Karen podcast from Law&Crime and Wondery and will explore the case surrounding Read and the 2022 death of her boyfriend, Boston police officer John O’Keefe. Banks will also serve as an executive producer on the project.
Elizabeth Banks Takes on Karen Read’s Complicated Story
Read became a national figure after O’Keefe was found unresponsive outside a home in Canton, Massachusetts, in January 2022. Prosecutors accused Read of striking him with her SUV, while her defense argued that she was framed and that O’Keefe’s death occurred inside the house.
Read’s first trial ended with a hung jury. At her second trial, she was acquitted of the major charges, including second-degree murder and manslaughter, though she was convicted of operating under the influence.
Banks’ casting marks her first major screen portrayal of a real person, adding another high-profile role to the actress’s career. She recently starred in Prime Video’s The Better Sister, another series involving a fictional murder investigation.
Prime Video Brings the Controversial Case to Television
The upcoming series will be showrun and executive produced by Justin Noble, with David E. Kelley also attached as an executive producer. The project is expected to examine the investigation, trials and intense public debate that surrounded Read’s case.
The Karen Read story has already attracted multiple screen adaptations and documentary projects, highlighting the enormous public interest surrounding the case. Matt Damon’s production company, for example, announced in July 2026 that it was in the early stages of developing another adaptation.
With Elizabeth Banks now attached to portray Read, audiences will get another dramatic interpretation of a case that has remained deeply divisive. The series is set to bring the courtroom saga, competing narratives and media frenzy surrounding the case to a new audience.
