Trump, Putin to Meet in Budapest for Peace Talks on Russia-Ukraine War

President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that he and Russian President Vladimir Putin will meet in Budapest, Hungary, to discuss possible pathways to end Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine. The announcement followed what Mr. Trump described as a “lengthy” and “productive” phone call with Putin that lasted more than two hours.

According to both U.S. and Russian officials, the upcoming summit will focus on achieving a “peaceful political and diplomatic solution” to the conflict that has raged since 2022. “President Putin and I will then meet in an agreed upon location, Budapest, Hungary, to see if we can bring this ‘inglorious’ war between Russia and Ukraine to an end,” Mr. Trump wrote on Truth Social.

The Kremlin confirmed details of the conversation, noting that the exchange was “informative, frank, and confidential.” Putin’s foreign policy aide, Yuri Ushakov, stated that both leaders agreed to begin immediate preparations for the summit, which is expected to include senior diplomats from both nations.

Preparations Underway: U.S. and Russian Advisers to Meet First

Before the Budapest summit, Secretary of State Marco Rubio will lead preliminary talks with Russian counterparts, joined by senior U.S. officials yet to be named. The discussions are intended to outline potential frameworks for ceasefire terms, humanitarian corridors, and future diplomatic guarantees.

Mr. Trump will also meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House on Friday, a session expected to balance U.S. engagement between both Kyiv and Moscow. Administration sources say the president aims to reassure Ukraine that any diplomatic process will prioritize its sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Despite the diplomatic tone, tensions remain high in Washington. Senate Majority Leader John Thune announced plans to move forward with a bipartisan sanctions bill targeting Russia, stating that “the time has come” for stronger U.S. measures. The bill’s advancement could complicate negotiations, as Moscow continues to resist Western pressure.

Melania Trump’s Role and Broader Strategic Implications

President Trump also highlighted first lady Melania Trump’s humanitarian role in ongoing efforts to reunite Ukrainian children displaced by the war with their families. “President Putin thanked the First Lady for her involvement with children. He was very appreciative, and said that this will continue,” Mr. Trump wrote, suggesting that such humanitarian initiatives could build trust ahead of the summit.

The president added that he and Putin discussed postwar economic cooperation, expressing optimism about restoring trade between the United States and Russia once peace is achieved. He drew parallels between ongoing Middle East negotiations and the effort to end the war in Ukraine, saying, “I actually believe that the success in the Middle East will help in our negotiation in attaining an end to the war.”

The planned meeting in Budapest would mark the second in-person encounter between Trump and Putin this year, following their August talks in Alaska. While details of the new summit’s agenda remain confidential, both leaders appear determined to frame it as a turning point in a conflict that has reshaped global geopolitics.
